Remove Maharashtra ATS Chief Rakesh Maria: JTSA

New Delhi: Following the acquittal of Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin by the Mumbai Special Court in 26/11 case Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association (JTSA) demanded Rakesh Maria be removed from his police duties.

JTSA alleges that the verdict proves that Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin had been framed. Mumbai Police had claimed that the duo had surveyed the targets, though David Headley has pleaded guilty to this in the US.

Judge Tahaliyani also censured the Mumbai Police for failing to control the terrorists at Cama hospital itself, which would have considerably reduced the loss of life and property on that November night. This is significant considering that Vinita Kamte, widow of a slain ATS officer, had revealed on the basis of the logs of calls between ATS chief Hemant Karkare and the police control room, that Rakesh Maria repeatedly ignored the plea for reinforcements at the Cama Hospital. Rakesh Maria now presides over the Pune blasts investigations as the chief of ATS.

JTSA demanded that Rakesh Maria be immediately be removed from this position and all those guilty of fabricating evidence against Ansari and Sabahuddin be tried in the court of law so as to deter the investigating agencies from trying to falsely implicate innocents in terror cases.

A statement released by Manisha Sethi, Ghazi Shahnawaz, Adeel Mehdi and Ahmed Sohaib on behalf of JTSA draws attention to the fact that investigating agencies almost always target Muslims as terror suspect even when we have overwhelming evidence of Hindutva involvement in various terrorism cases. The anti-Muslim behaviour of police officers lead to “over two dozen Muslim men were detained and tortured for weeks,” stated JTSA.

JTSA saluted Hemant Karkare and advocate Shahid Azmi for their struggle for justice. Karkare was killed during 26/11 attack and Azmi was gunned down earlier this year.
