Kozhikode: Muslim colleges in Kerala have turned against the implementation of the Ananthakrishnan Committee Report to amend the laws that govern universities in the state. The suggestions of the M Ananthakrishnan Committee which the government is hurrying to implement are politically-biased and anti-minority, said Dr Fasal Gafoor, president of the Muslim Education Society. He was speaking at a press conference with other members of the Federation of Muslim Colleges in Kozhikode. Dr Gafoor said that the suggestions put forward by the Committee, whose members had no relation at all with the running of the aided colleges in Kerala, would create problems in the higher education field of the state. Most of the suggestions are not practicable and lead to political interference in even the day-to-day running of the colleges. The report was made by not consulting with any organisation like the Federation, he added.

The suggestions put forward by the Committee report would be helpful for the different governments to implement their own specific political motives in the colleges, said Adv M Muhammed, secretary of the Federation. The office-bearers of the Federation added that the suggestion to limit the tenure of college principals to three years would adversely affect the development of the colleges. K Abdul Qader, KV Kunhammed and O Abdul Ali also took part in the press conference.

Meanwhile, the Ananthakrishnan Committee Report will reportedly be discussed in detail in the meeting of the leaders of organizations in the universities convened on October 27 by the state Higher Education Council. The Committee was reportedly formed for the unification of all the universities in the state by reviewing the acts and statutes of each university. Some of the recommendations put forward by the Committee are formation of clusters joining colleges, empowering the Syndicate to appoint the Pro Vice Chancellor with the permission of the Vice Chancellor, to limit the membership of the Senate to 50 and that of the Syndicate to 15, and to select the members of the Syndicate through nomination, etc. The Committee also reportedly recommends that the Governor be removed from the post of the Chancellor and another person be appointed by him as the Chancellor.
