Quarterly Nisa: A research magazine on women issues

By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net,

There are thousands of Urdu magazines devoted to literature, religion, and news. A much needed addition to the list of Urdu magazines is Nisa, a quarterly research journal, which plan to focus on research on issues relating to women. The first issue that was recently launched in Hyderabad is impressive with its range of topics and selection of articles.

Nisa was launched on March 8th, 2011 in Hyderabad

Research articles are on topics such as women’s rights in Indian Constitution, an analysis of Andhra Pradesh government’s schemes for women, and domestic violence. Profiles of women as diverse in their field and time period as activist Irom Sharmila, Superintendent of a women’s jail Bilqis Rehana, and first female Urdu editor Begum Sughra Humayun Mirza adds value to the magazine. Given the activist and social-work background of people who launched this magazine, there is no surprise that one article is actually a case study of a woman who is caught in family, psychological, and terror fears. A couple of articles in English will hopefully make it accessible to a wider audience.

This splendid magazine is edited by Dr. Rafat Seema and sub-editors are Kaneez Fatima, Mumtaz Fatima, Syeda Safia Jilani, Azeezunisa, and Viqar Atiya.

Close proximity to Centre for Women’s Studies of Maulana Azad National Urdu University will ensure that this magazine will continue to get quality articles for future issues.
