Bengaluru: PDP chairman Abdunnasir Maudany, who is in the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru in connection with the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts, has complained to the superintendent of prison regarding the inhuman treatment meted out to him. He reportedly complained that the jail authorities are not following even the directions of the Supreme Court in his case.

Maudany complained that the jail authorities were not providing him proper Ayurveda treatment, which the Supreme Court had asked them to. He was taken out of the jail for treatment once, after he asked the authorities several times. And even then he was not admitted to the hospital or even taken out of the vehicle. Despite his continuous request not to take him in the police bus, Maudany was taken in the bus to the hospital which was 67 kms away. Maudany mentioned that such journeys were very difficult for him as he was suffering from several illnesses including back pain. When asked why he was not taken to the doctor, Maudany was informed that the doctor was on tour. The journey of 134 kms could have been avoided, had the jail authorities phoned the doctor beforehand, Maudany reportedly said in the complaint.

The 24-hour presence of the lights of the CCTV cameras in the room makes sleeping hard for him. The court had directed the jail authorities to take the necessary measures in this regard, but to no avail. No action has been taken even after the Karnataka Diabetic Centre suggested immediate treatment for the problem with his eyes, the complaint reportedly added.

Meanwhile, the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring submitted a memorandum before the Karnataka Human Rights Commission asking it to protect the human rights of Maudany. The Commission should visit Maudany in the jail and see the conditions directly, said the memorandum submitted under the leadership of Mathew Philip, executive director of the organization. The memorandum reportedly says that cameras have been placed even in the bathroom of Maudany which is a violation of human rights. It also mentions the absence of any medical treatment for Maudany, who suffers from various illnesses.

Maudany, 31st accused in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blast which killed one and injured many others, was arrested from Kerala by the Karnataka police on August 17, 2010, while he was on his way to surrender in court. After 10 days in police custody, he was remanded to judicial custody which has been extended ever since. He was denied bail by the Karnataka High Court, after which he appealed in the Supreme Court. His bail plea is under consideration in the apex court.

The Supreme Court had directed the authorities concerned to provide Ayurveda treatment for Maudany in the jail and to take care of his health conditions. On May 26, Maudany was taken to a hospital 67 kms away from the jail and brought back without any treatment as the authorities had not made any prior arrangements for it, nor had they booked the doctor. The act is seen as a way to show that he was given medical care.

Maudany had earlier spent nearly 10 years as an under-trial in Tamil Nadu jails for his alleged involvement in the 1998 Coimbatore blast case, in which he was acquitted and released in 2007.
