Forbesganj police atrocity: Munaf Zeena’s open letter to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar

Dear Mr Chief Minister,

Council of Indian Muslims—CIM (UK) is aghast at the brutal killing of poor labourers by the Bihar police in Forbesganj on 02 June 2011. A video footage of this barbarity of Bihar police is now available for anyone to watch.

We are sure, by now you will have seen the gruesome pictures of the victims of the “brave” police of Bihar that did not even spare a pregnant woman and an infant.

Mr Chief Minister, this will be hard to believe that by now you have not watched the footage of a “victorious” and jubilant member of your police force swearing at and and jumping on the face and chest of a fallen man hit by bullets and who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. In the clip his colleagues may be heard saying, “ho gaya, ho gaya, saza mil gaya” (It’s all done. They have been punished.) that tells a lot about the mindset of those entrusted with the sacred duty of keeping and maintaining law and order in the state.

We are sure that you will be aware that these innocent Muslims, six of whom were shot dead and nine were injured, were hunted like animals and included a pregnant woman and an infant child.

What was the crime of these wretched souls except that they had dared stop a wealthy industrialist who, with the connivance of the administration, was permanently blocking the road that these poor labourers had been using for years for their daily business?

Mr Chief Minister, the people of Bihar, especially Muslims, had voted you in power with great hopes and expectations and had believed your promises of improving their living conditions and providing justice.

But, sadly, Mr Chief Minister, 12 days on, since the incident took place, no action has yet been taken against the culprits that would distinguish you from rest of the politicians who come to power with great pomp and show and promises but once in power they do not behave differently from the politicians in rest of the country.

Soon after the liberation of the country the visionary Prime Minister of India Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru had abolished the cruel feudal system. Unfortunately, those old jagirdars have been replaced by the new business magnates and industrialists who are being cooperated and facilitated by the central and state governments in harassing the poor masses and depriving them of their basic human rights.

Mr Chief Minister, in order to save your credibility and prove that you can do justice and can take a stand against the bullying of these so called barons we urge you to:
1) Immediately suspend, arrest and try the officers who are involved in this cold blooded murder of six people and injuring nine others;
2) Pay adequate compensation to the victims or their families;
3) Declare the road in question out of bond for the industrialist who wants to occupy and block it for the poor labourers.

Best regards,

MUNAF ZEENA
Chairman, Council of Indian Muslims (UK)
