Happy Birthday to Catholic State of France!

Mumbai: Ban on veil by the French government drew much reaction the world over and India was not an exception. Many Muslim organizations including women in veil protested against the ban and expressed their disenchantment by submitting the memorandums to the Consulate General of France in Mumbai.

I had a chance of meeting with the French consulate in Mumbai, H E Francois Pujolas, where he explained in detail his government’s (Nicohals Sarkozy’s) view. Pujolas started his discussion stating that the law was not against Islam and it was nowhere mentioned in the text. Paradoxically in the same meeting he mentioned his government consultation with the French Muslim counsel that gave them the green signal, mentioning nowhere in the Quran it’s mentioned to conceal (instead of cover) the face.

L-to R- The Counslate General of France, Mr.H.E.Francois Pujolas and Rehan Ansari

He also stated that the law is passed by the democratically elected representatives of France and if the people in the France will not like this government’s decision than they will vote against it. According to him, the first and foremost reason is that veil is against the basic concept of living together in France. Everybody has a right to see whom is s/he talking to and dealing with in the public life. Public Safety and Terror threat were the other two reasons he cited.

The first question came into mind was if it was not against Islam then why the hell Sarkozy’s government consulted the French Muslim council. He replied, scantily, that while making the law we need to take into considerations different views but unable to explain why only the French Muslim Council was consulted.

France is a secular democracy and approximately 80% of the population, at least nominally, ascribes to the Catholic religion nearly one million French are Protestants, 6.5 lacs Jews and majority of whom are recent immigrants. Whereas 5 million Muslims mainly of North African descents are the second largest majority in France who migrated in 1950’s to fulfill the need of manpower for the boom of economy.

It was necessary to know the demography of the France because Nicholas Sarkozy’s government is a democratically elected one and therefore, the consulate of France meant to say, have a right to make laws that suit them or their culture even if it goes against the agreed Principles of democracy and secularism.

France Counslate General speaking to Burqa clad women

The question which arises then, is the France truly a secular democratic country? Or a Majoritarian state that ascribes to the Catholic religion and where the majority has a right to crush tiny minority because only 1800 to 2000 women observe veil as reported in the media.

The French counsel did not forget to mention the strict rules in Saudi Arabia and said that when French women visits in Saudi Arabia they follow the rules and lives according to the Saudi culture. But I am sure he will not be able to answer that Saudi Arabia is a declared Islamic state and France proclaims to be a Secular Democracy. Or after a ban on veil, French democracy and secularism, where everybody was free and had a right to follow their religion, has died and a new Catholic State of France is born.

SLAVERY, DISCRIMINATION, HATRED - NEW MOTTO OF FRANCE

ATTENTION FRENCH CONSULATE GENERAL IN INDIA: INSTEAD OF " LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY" THE MOTTO OF TODAY'S FRANCE MUST BE:"SLAVERY, DISCRIMINATION. HATRED"

What a joke PASHA

Would SAUDI ARABIA or any Islamic country allow a few French women to walk about in BIKINIS?? Will any Muslims in "Democratic India- Kashmir or in TN" allow BIKINI clad women?? SAUDIs punish anyone- including non-Muslims eating publicaly in the month of RAMZAN. So if MUSLIMS can do anything as they please where ever they are in majority why complain when France passes a law as per FRENCH CULTURE?? Those Muslims who doesn't like it must get out of France as directed in Qur'an itself.

You are dumb ..did not read the entire article

You should have read the last part of it which says". But I am sure he will not be able to answer that Saudi Arabia is a declared Islamic state and France proclaims to be a Secular Democracy. Or after a ban on veil, French democracy and secularism, where everybody was free and had a right to follow their religion, has died and a new Catholic State of France is born."

So it is clear that Saudi arabia is a declared islamic state and France is a declared secular democracy..THEN where that has gone?.

Wrong knowledge is dangerous

As a non-muslim who has lived in Saudi Arabia and worked for Aramco, I know for a fact that Americans and other nationals wear bikinis in private beaches owned by the company.
Also, only restaurant and shops are closed in Ramazan during the day. IF you can find a shop and food, or eat your own food, no one will stop you.

And when did Muslims in India stop foreigners wearing bikinis on beaches? And who in their right minds would wear bikinis in Kashmir. I am Indian and although I take my family out to the beach, I would not agree with my wife or daughter wearing bikinis because I think they are immodest and it has nothing to do with Islam.

And almost all the niqab wearing women in France (300 or so) are French citizes half of them converts.

FRENCH CULTURE ALLOWS WEARING OF VEILS

DAMN IT. ONLY ONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FRENCH CULTURE WILL SAY THAT WEARING OF VEILS BY LADIES IS AGAINST FRENCH CULTURE. NUNS WEAR VEILS AND LADIES FROM ARISTOCRATIC AND ROYAL FAMILIES STILL WEAR VEILS. IF IN DOUBT, ASK THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF THAT COUNTRY
S.M.PASHA

Don't confuse the issue.

Don't confuse the issue. French has not banned "head veils". Only veils covering the face have been banned. So Muslim women in France can continue wearing the black over gown but the restriction is only on covering the FACE. Nuns, Royals or anyother French do not cover their face. Qur'an also does not direct women to cover the face. It only tells - O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59)

This SURAH is a MADINA SURAH after death of Khadeeja and after Muhammad had married MANY younger women and had become insecure.

Congrats

Kudos,to Br.Rehan Ansari and his team for eliciting the views of the top French diplomat in Mumbai in order to put forth their views. One must know the events in France that Sarkozy's UMP has to create some kind of demon in front of its people to scare them and turn the attention away from their social and economic issues which has risen considerably and snatch votes from Le Pen's Far right. We must learn through the actions of scholars like Prof.Tariq Ramadan, with his remarkable educative awareness among not just third generation French Muslims but most importantly communication with the lay public and masses. It remains to be seen if the case comes up at the European court it will be clear whether France is distinct from Europe and how many french muslim sacrificial lambs would they slaughter to preserve their melting pot of materialism brought after blowing Catholicism out.

Do not confufe pre-1789

Do not confufe pre-1789 France with today's France.
