Anti-Kudankulam nuclear plant activist Udayakumar honored

Chennai: Leader of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy(PMANE) Dr. S.P. Udayakumar was bestowed with the Mukundan C Menon award and a cash prize of 25,000 for the year 2012.

It is an award constituted in the name of the human rights activist and journalist Dr. Mukundan C. Menon of Kollam.



It was awarded to Dr. Udayakumar for leading the struggle against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, in a simple ceremony in Idinthakarai. He then handed over the award and the cash prize to the people.

Residents of the area are against the nuclear power plant because they believe it will have a disastrous impact on their lives and livelihood.

The team reached Idinthakarai amid tight police security and the enforcement of Section 144 order.

The team consists of Mr. Ibrahim Kutty, Mr. Reny Ayline , activists of the National Council of Human Rights Organisation handed over the award and the cash prize.

The team who were accompanied by a journalist and a photographer were stopped on their way back near Koodankulam and they were taken to Radhapuram Police station for interrogation and finally freed after 2 hours of inquiry.
