Washim (Maharashtra): The family of a murdered youth during a communal violence ignited under the pretense of ‘Love Jihad’ at Karanja town in this district is disenchanted with the state government as it has not received any compensation even after two weeks of his murder.

Karanja witnessed communal tension on July 13 following the marriage of a youth belonging to a minority community with a girl from another community that resulted into the death of youth, identified as 35-year-old Shujaoddin, and injuries to many others apart from damage to public property.

Purportedly, the girl is a daughter of a local political leader with association with the right wing extremist organisations. Apart from the RSS, many more Hindu organisations, angry because of the marriage, have been holding meetings on the issue since then.

On the morning of July 13, the situation turned violent and there was a clash between the people from two communities, resulting in Shujaoddin’s death.

Shujaoddin’s family claims he was innocent and totally disconnected from the groups involved in the violence but was murdered by enraged Hindu men while he was walking down the street to his home. He is survived by widowed wife and three daughters. The family was entirely dependent on Shujaoddin who used to do labour work alongside farming. Now, after two weeks have passed to his sudden death the family claims government has not reached out to help them and have not announced any compensation although they have sent a letter to the district collector to provide compensation.

“Our family is into despair due to his unexpected demise. We could not celebrate Eid and now we are seeing darkness before our eyes as he is survived by three daughters. Government is not announcing any compensation despite our number of requests to the Superintendent of Police and Collector,” Kaisar, brother-in-law of Shujaoddin told TwoCircles.net.

Some Muslim organizations are supporting the family. Jamat-e-Islami Hind sent a letter to the Chief Minister seeking Rs 20 lakh as compensation for the family.

“Functionaries of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind headed by Maulana Nadeem Siddique came to our home and extended every sort of help. He is in our touch. But none of the minister either called for help nor, at least, condoled the loss that our family is suffering from,” he said.

On questioning if the Minority Commission has raised its voice, he told, “State Minority commission chief Muhammad Hussain Amir Sahib visited us and assured of compensation. But after his visit he never called us. It is been two weeks that we lost Shujaoddin but we have not heard of any compensation from government.”

Yusuf Bhai, a social activist from Karanja who is helping the family in reaching out to the government to get compensation too feels that the government is not taking interest in the matter. He said, “The family is illiterate so I assume it to be my duty to help them get compensation from the government so that the family can move on after the big loss it suffered. We handed over the letter to the Collector but he has not responded till now.”

“In any other cases collector immediately announces compensation then why delay in this genuine case where an innocent was murdered in the heat of communal violence that could have been prevented had police acted vigilantly?” he questioned.
