Islamic social organisations provide releif to Gaja Cyclone victims

Gaja cyclone that hit coastal and delta districts in Tamil Nadu created a heavy loss uprooting thousands of acres of coconut grooves, several electric poles and blew away roof tops of many a house.

Coastal district of Tamilnadu like Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur,Puducherry were severely affected by the Gaja cyclone. And some of the non-coastal districts like Tanjore, Trichy, Pudukkottai, Dindigul were also affected.

While the Government of Tamil Nadu received 13 crore rupees from donors and has demanded Rs.15 thousand crores from centre towards relief fund.

While the Government is awaiting the relief fund, Islamic  social organisations and political parties such as India Thowheed jamath, SDPI, TMMK, MMK cadres began relief work by distributing relief materials to the survivors of Gaja cyclone.

India Thowheed Jamath(INTJ) under the leadership of its President S.M.backer visited the cyclone hit areas and distributed relief materials to the victims of Gaja.

In Muthupet, a coastal town of Tiruvarur district, there were around 350 Gaja affected  families in Pettai and  fakir wadi areas while in Adirampattinam town and thokkalikadu, Mahilan kottai hamlets nearly one lakh survivors all from the Hindu community were labourers depending solely on  coconut groves.

“Almost 3 thousand acres of Coconut groves has been totally destroyed. A majority of us are daily wages labourers and depend only on coconut groves. But no Government official has visited our village till date. We have undergone huge losses with no electricity from the last one week. We need adequate compensation The Government should build concrete houses for us.”-said Pichai Muthu, local leader of communist party..
