CPI not to renominate sitting MPs from Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram : The Communist Party of India (CPI) has decided not to renominate its three sitting MPs from Kerala for the Lok Sabha elections next month, party sources said Wednesday.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) also dropped six sitting MPs but cleared six others for the polls April 16.

Speaking to IANS on condition of anonymity, a Left Democratic Front (LDF) leader said that the official announcement would be made Thursday after the LDF meeting is held here.

According to the sources, CPI dropped C.K. Chandrapan (Trissur), Paniyan Ravindran (Thiruvananthapuram), and Chengara Surendran (Adoor, Scheduled Castes).

The CPI nominated C.N. Jayadevan for Trissur, P. Ramachandran Nair for Thiruvananthapuram, and R.S. Anil for the newly constituted Mavelikara – a Scheduled Castes seat. Mavelikara was carved out of Adoor after the delimitation process was completed.

The CPI-M has decided to renominate six sitting MPs, including P.Karunakaran for Kasargode, P. Satheedevi for Vadakara, T.K. Hamsa for Malappuram, Suresh Kurup for Kottayam, K.S.Manoj for Alappuzha and P.Rajendran for Kollam, according to the sources.

The party has also nominated K.K. Ragesh for Kannur, M.B. Rajesh for Palakkad, Mohammed Riaz for Kozhikode, Sindhu Joy for Ernakulam, U.P. Joseph for Chalakudy, K. Anthagopan for Pathanamthitta, P.K. Biju for Elathur Scheduled Caste and A.Sampath for Attingal.

The sitting MPs who failed to get nominations include N.N. Krishna Das, S. Ajayakumar, Lonappan Nambadan, Sebastian Paul, C.S. Sujatha and Varkala Radhakrishnan.

Meanwhile, confusion continues over the CPI’s fourth seat at Ponani where the LDF has already given the nod for Hussain Randhathany to contest as an Independent candidate.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters here Wednesday that all the difference of opinion would be settled when the LDF meets here Thursday.

Kerala has 20 seats and currently all except Ponani is held by the ruling LDF.
