At least 40 people were killed in house collapse, lightning and other weather-related incidents.

Monsoon has weakened with an extremely low-pressure area advancing towards Rajasthan after remaining active here for the past three days, the regional meteorological office said.

"The low pressure area, which was in the vicinity of Shivpuri district, has moved towards Rajasthan," said D.P. Dubey, director of weather bureau.

The bureau predicted a respite from heavy rains for the next five days even as life was returning to normal in the flood-affected districts of Khandwa, Harda, Betul and Hoshangabad.

The district administration was assessing the loss caused due to the heavy rains, said an official of the flood relief department.
