Bhubaneswar : Tension prevailed at a major state-owned steel plant in Orissa’s Jajpur district Friday when a labourer died after getting entangled in the conveyor belt.
The labourer Dwarikesh Panda (29) of Jajpur town died inside the premises of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL).
“Panda died on the spot as he reportedly got entangled in the conveyor belt of the raw material handling system. He was engaged by a private job contractor firm,” S.K. Mohapatra, inspector-in-charge of Kalinga Nagar police station told IANS.
As soon as the news of the mishap spread, hundreds of workers surrounded the plant demanding that compensation of Rs.1 million and a job to the next of kin of the deceased. Work at the plant was stalled till 3 p.m. The situation was brought under control after police reached at the spot.
Confirming the mishap, D.P. Mishra (general manager PR) of NINL told IANS that the worker had died under “mysterious circumstances” and the police were investigating.
This is the fourth incident in the Kalinga Nagar industrial complex this year. Earlier, three labourers had died and several others sustained severe injuries in separate mishaps. All the mishaps were reported from the fabrication site of Jindal Stainless Limited, where 14 agitating tribals were shot dead by the police on Jan 2 last year.
