Kafeel Ahmed, a 27-year-old engineer, suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body in the attempted attack on June 30 at Glasgow Airport.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said that Ahmed died Thursday evening in Glasgow Royal Infirmary after weeks in a coma.

The engineer from Bangalore, India, was one of two men held at the airport after a Jeep Cherokee loaded with petrol and propane gas cylinders struck the entrance of the terminal building and burst into flames.

Pictures of an off-duty Scottish police officer using a fire extinguisher to save Ahmed’s life were shown around the world.

The co-driver, Iraqi doctor Bilal Abdullah, is in custody in London and has been charged in connection with the attack.

Ahmed was kept under armed guard in hospital and had been described by health officials as being in a critical condition.

Contrary to earlier reports, Ahmed was not a medic but an engineer with a doctorate in design and technology.

He had studied in Cambridge and Belfast, Northern Ireland.
