Rae, who was working for mobile service operator SMART Communications in the Philippines, will succeed Vikash Saraf. He has also worked at Vodafone in the Philippines.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Donald Rae as CEO of Essar Group’s Telecom Business. Don is a veteran in the telecom space and joins Essar from SMART Communications, the leading mobile operator in Philippines,” said a statement by Essar Global Ltd.

According to an Essar spokesperson: “Rae would be looking at our overall telecom business. The Vodafone venture has got nothing to do with it. That is a different entity altogether and it would have its own CEO.”

Vodafone acquired 52 percent stake in Hutch-Essar from Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecommunications in May for $11 billion. The Ruia-promoted Essar Group has a 33 percent stake in the venture.

In the new entity it has been decided that Essar’s vice chairman Ravi Ruia will be chairman while Vodafone’s India-born chief Arun Sarin will be vice-chairman.
