Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala’s leader of opposition Oommen Chandy Thursday said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan should apologise to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for threatening to stage a protest in front of his residence.

Chandy said: “On July 29, Achuthanandan announced that he would stage a protest in front of the prime minister’s house because the centre has not sanctioned anything for tackling calamities after monsoon hit the state.

“We checked up in Delhi and found out that the centre had received a memorandum seeking assistance from Kerala government on Aug 3 and the letter was dated July 30. How come he announced that the centre is not doing anything on July 29?

“We really wish that Achuthanandan would apologise to the prime minister and not allow Keralites to be put to shame through a protest because he is not doing what has to be done by applying to the centre in time. All this is happening because he is caught in internal feuds within his party,” said Chandy.

“We will join Achuthanandan in protest if he can come out with a charge sheet against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on which of the demands has not been met by the centre,” he added.

Around 200 people were killed and a substantial amount of crops were destroyed in the monsoon that hit the state last month.
