The Urs ceremony is observed on the death anniversary of Shah Jahan.

The seven-coloured (saptrangi) chadar was offered by religious heads of various faiths, who marched in a procession from the main forecourt of the mausoleum at 2 p.m.

The memorial to love was flooded with people as entry is free during the three-day ceremony.

District officials made elaborate arrangements to control the movement of people, but the crowd spilled over to the restricted areas within the monument.

Till a few years ago, Shah Jahan’s Urs used to be a routine religious activity and only a few people participated. But this year the crowd has broken all records, putting security agencies under tremendous pressure.

This year, the descendents of the Mughal emperor attended as guests.

But they were not very happy with the apparent chaos and lack of security. Talking to reporters, Yaqoob Habibuddin Tusi, a descendent, indicated that he would move the Supreme Court to take appropriate measures to control the crowd and impose foolproof security.
