Baghdad : An Iraqi court Tuesday began a new trial for 15 aides of former president Saddam Hussain over charges of crimes against humanity during the Shia uprising after the 1991 Gulf War.
The Iraqi High Tribunal kicked off the third prosecution for Saddam’s aides for their alleged role in killing of 100,000 of people in the Shia-dominated cities in southern Iraq after the then US-led alliance evicted Saddam’s army from Kuwait.
Saddam’s cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as Chemical Ali, was one of those who took the seats in the dock, including former defence minister Sultan Hashim al-Tai and Hussein Rashid al-Tikriti, former armed forces deputy chief of operations.
The three have already been sentenced to death in the genocide trial, named Anfal, against the Kurdish minority in northern Iraq.
