Kolkata : A soldier was killed and six others were critically injured Wednesday when an army truck lost control and rolled down the hillside into the Teesta river in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.
Nine soldiers were still missing while the truck could not be found either, police said.
The accident took place near a bridge between Chalsa and Mongpong in Darjeeling district on National Highway-31, about 650 km from here. The truck with 16 soldiers was on its way to Siliguri from Binaguri in the district.
“One body of a soldier was recovered while six others were critically injured. All of them were admitted to Binaguri Army Hospital,” Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) R.J.S Nawla told IANS.
He said helicopters and boats were being used for rescue operations.
“Nine people are missing so far. But we can’t confirm any more deaths until we get a body from the river. The military truck has not yet been spotted in the river,” Nawla added.
