Dhaka : The Bangladeshi government Friday morning lifted the indefinite curfew in place for 14 hours as no major untoward incidents were reported in the past two days.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nayim Ahmed said there would be no curfew from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. However, he said in a notification that the curfew would be in place from 10 p.m. until further orders.
It was lifted for three hours Thursday to allow stranded people to reach their destinations and city-dwellers to attend urgent business or do some quick shopping.
The army-backed caretaker government imposed the indefinite curfew in Dhaka and five divisional headquarters from 8 p.m. Wednesday in the wake of violent student protests in the capital and elsewhere in the country after a fight between soldiers and some students in the Dhaka University playground on Monday.
The students held processions after the soldiers beat some students, demanding withdrawal of the army camp from the campus and an apology from Army Chief Moeen U. Ahmed. They also demanded withdrawal of the state of emergency imposed on Jan 11.
