Chandigarh : The Punjab Police Friday issued an alert against five women followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, saying they could go to any extent to avenge the allegations levelled at their sect chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.
The police have circulated photographs and sketches of these women to most police stations across the state, a police officer said.
The Punjab Police intelligence wing fears that these women could attempt self-immolation or take any other drastic step to harm any VIP, especially the ruling Akali Dal leadership.
The Akali leadership has been openly critical of the dera chief ever since he supported the Congress in the February assembly polls in Punjab.
Police have been instructed to keep a watch on the suspected women to prevent any untoward incident.
Security around Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his MP son Sukhbir Badal, both of whom enjoy Z-plus security cover, continues to be tight following the latest report from intelligence officials.
Security is also being beefed up around Akal Takht head Joginder Singh Vedanti and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar following these developments.
The sect chief had got embroiled in a controversy with the Sikh community after he portrayed himself like the 10th Sikh guru Gobind Singh in May.
A police team Friday reached the sect headquarters at Sirsa town in Haryana, 300 km from here, to question the sect chief and some of his followers.
