Dhaka, Bangladesh : The government has formed a one-member judicial inquiry commission headed by retired High Court Judge, Justice Mohammad Habibur Rahman Khan, to probe the August 20 incident on the Dhaka University campus.
The commission has been requested to submit its report within 15 working days, a press release of the Ministry of Home affairs said here Saturday.
The government has made it categorically clear that the authorities remain always alert to ensure sanctity and congenial academic atmosphere on the DU campus.
Besides, the press release said, the government is firmly committed to provide all kinds of cooperation and assistance to the respected teachers and the students of the university.
It was mentioned in the press release that the authorities have arrested some people in connection with the incidents taken place on Aug 20 and the subsequent days.
“Actions are being taken against the arrested persons as per laws of the land. If allegation is not proved against anyone, he will surely be released,” the press release said.
It further said that several cases were filed with different police stations of the city against the unidentified persons on charges of creating chaos and disturbances during the recent incidents.
In this connection, it added, the government wants to categorically make it clear that none would be harassed or arrested without specific charges.
The home ministry, in its press release, pointed out that a clash took place on August 20 between the DU students and some members of the armed forces cantering an untoward incident.
Taking advantage of the DU incident, some opportunists have created a chaotic situation there, it said.
The government to protect life and property and also to maintain law and order has enforced curfew from 8 pm on Aug 22 in six divisional towns including the capital city of Dhaka. The law and order situation has gradually came to normal after imposition of curfew, the press release said.
Meanwhile, the government expressed its deep regrets over some unwanted incidents that took place at different places after the enforcement of curfew on August 22.
The press release pointed out that altercations and other untoward incidents took place at different places between the members of the print and electronic media, government officers and employees and members of other professions and the members of law enforcing agencies over the curfew passes and other issues.
While expressing regrets over such untoward incidents, the government assured that necessary steps would be taken to stop their re occurrence.
