The maid, who worked at Devrajan’s house for the past 20 years, and her boyfriend were taken into custody for their alleged role in the murder.

Brigadier Salih Al Mutwa, director-general of Sharjah Police, said the maid’s boyfriend, also from Sri Lanka, was arrested at Dubai Airport while trying to flee the country, Khaleej Times reported.

Devarajan’s body was discovered by his son Binu at their residence in Musalla Tower apartment near Rolla Square in Sharjah Thursday.

In her statement, the maid has reportedly told the police that Devarajan had tried to sexually harass her several times and her boyfriend had then decided to kill him.

She said that Devarajan had asked her to come to the house Wednesday night and her boyfriend had accompanied her to the flat and hid in the kitchen. When Devrajan allegedly tried to molest her, he came out of the kitchen and hit the businessman on the head with a heavy tool and then slit his throat with a knife.

Devarajan, who hailed from Kerala, had been living in the UAE since 1976. He ran Al Bine Trading, a Sharjah-based company engaged in importing packing materials from the US.

He had recently started his own manufacturing unit in the Sharjah Industrial Area.
