The global firm said in a statement here Tuesday that it was scouting for a suitable location in the southern city in Georgia to set up the centre, which can house about 500 employees.

“The centre will help us in hiring a certain profile of skilled workers and domain experts who will be critical to our business growth plans in the US. The strategy is to invest and recruit local talent for customer service and expand our technology service business in the region,” Wipro Technologies president P.R. Chandrasekar said.

Wipro has selected Atlanta to capitalise on the talent pool available in the region, given its proximity to key universities. The centre will commence operations with 200 employees and ramp up the headcount to 500 by the third year.

“We will have a training facility to provide technical and soft-skills for the employees. We also plan to sponsor higher education degrees for 40 percent of them for training and development,” Chandrasekar said.

Georgia governor Sonny Perdue said the state was proud to host the Wipro centre and offer workforce and business assets for its growth in the US.

“It is an honour for us to have Wipro partnering with the University Sytem of Georgia to train and educate about 500 employees for its centre in Atlanta,” Perdue noted.

The Atlanta centre is part of Wipro’s strategy to build global delivery capabilities and increase its presence in the US, with a strong base for local hiring.

“We already have 12 offices across the US and the Atlanta centre will strengthen our global delivery capabilities, which include development centres in Brazil, eastern and western Europe, China, Mexico and Canada,” Chandrasekar added.
