Dhaka : The Indian High Commission here has denied media reports alleging the involvement of its officials in the recent student protests across Bangladesh.
Rejecting the reports, the high commission said that such reports ran counter to the development of friendly relations between the two countries.
“We are greatly disappointed to see several news reports in the Bangladesh media that said the Indian high commission officials were involved in the recent student unrest in Bangladesh,” said a high commission press statement Tuesday.
“The high commission categorically rejects such media reports as baseless, malicious, motivated and absolutely untrue.”
The high commission felt that such provocative reports were “highly regrettable”.
One person was killed and hundreds injured as agitated-students burnt public property after a fracas at a football match in Dhaka University, triggering nationwide protests. Parts of Bangladesh are still under curfew.
While allegations of the “India factor” in Bangladesh are not new, political analysts feel that the operation of some terrorist outfits from the Bangladeshi territory who are inimical to India could affect bilateral ties between the two South Asian neighbours.
Indian media reports quoting intelligence and police sources said the hand of Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami (HUJI) was suspected in the blasts in Hyderabad Saturday and in May this year.
While condemning such terror attacks, Dhaka rejected such reports as “baseless” and warned that they were not conducive to friendly bilateral relations.
