Mumbai : In one of the biggest re-development programmes planned for India’s financial capital, residents of Dharavi, Asia’s biggest slum, will be provided better homes and civic amenities like schools and health facilities in a public-private partnership.
The Rs.92.50 billion (Rs.9,250 crore) redevelopment project would rehabilitate nearly 57,000 families squeezed into 535 acres in Dharavi. The project is slated to be completed within seven years of its initiation.
Apart from the standard 225 sq ft rehabilitation tenement, slum dwellers would get schools, health facilities, play grounds, wider roads, electricity, ample water supply, socio-cultural centres and other facilities.
Several leading names in infrastructure development have submitted Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the project; the last date for submissions is Friday.
The EoIs would be scrutinised by a committee headed by Chief Secretary Johny Joseph. The shortlisted candidates will submit bids by Oct 15 and the bids will be finalised by Dec 15, official sources said.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is the nodal agency for the project.
For proper implementation of the project, Dharavi has been divided into 10 sectors. The sectors will be developed by different developers and the buildings will be of seven storeys.
