London : The English Football Association (FA) is to investigate terrorist jibes made against Egyptian striker, Mido, in a northeast England derby match last Saturday.
“We will contact the clubs and get their views of what happened,” an FA spokesman told BBC Sport. “We will also look at the quotes from the player and take it from there,” the spokesman added.
The chanting was reported to have been made by Newcastle fans during their sides 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough, in which Mido scored one of the equalizing goals.
According to the Guardian newspaper, the persistent jibes made against the Muslim player in the premiership game, included “Mido, he’s got a bomb you know; Mido’s got a bomb.”
The player, who is the son of a wealthy Egyptian businessman, was the subject of a yellow card issued by the referee for his celebrations after he scored a goal.
Middlesbrough coach, Gareth Southgate, expressed disappointment with referee’s action in contrast to the abuse made against the striker.
“I find it strange that 3,000 people can abuse one person and nothing is done,” said Southgate. “In terms of civil liberties I find that strange. We had to calm Mido down at the end of the first half,” he said.
The Egyptian player was also the subject of abuse when he previously played for Tottenham in a London derby game against West Ham.
