Radhakrishnan to head Vikram Sarabhai space centre

Bangalore(IANS) : Senior space scientist K. Radhakrishnan has been appointed director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram, the space agency announced here Saturday.

Radhakrishnan, who was till recently head of the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) in Hyderabad, will succeed B.N. Suresh.

“Suresh has been shifted to spearhead the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), which has been set up this academic year in Thiruvananthapuram to attract engineering and science graduates to space technology and applications as a specialised field,” a statement issued by ISRO said.

Radhakrishnan, who joined ISRO as an avionics engineer in 1971, was also director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services 2000-2005 and project director of an early warning system for tsunami and storm surges.

During his three decades of association with the space agency, Radhakrishnan served at ISRO headquarters in Bangalore as the director of budget and economic analysis and the regional remote sensing service centre. He also worked as the mission director of an integrated mission for sustainable development.

Radhakrishan obtained a doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur and is an MBA graduate from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Bangalore.
