New Delhi : The paramedical employees of five state-run hospitals returned to work Tuesday, a day after the Delhi government invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to counter their strike.
The nurses and Class IV staff of the Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, Guru Nanak Eye Centre and G.B. Pant Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital withdrew their strike, called to press for regularisation of their jobs, as the government promised to look into their demands.
On Monday, the Delhi government declared that healthcare was an essential service and prohibited any strike in hospitals for next six months.
The paramedical employees have been putting pressure on the government to accept their demands and have on and off struck work, causing inconvenience to patients.
“We want the government not to privatise health services, stop recruiting people on contract basis and immediately fill up around 2,500 vacant posts across the government hospitals,” said a nurse of the G.B. Pant hospital.
