Pakistan: 1.2 million swat population made hostage by 2pc miscreants – Governor

Peshawar : The NWFP Governor, Lt.Gen. Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai has eulogized the role of the peace loving people of Swat during the recent operation and said that 1.6 million population of the area was taken as hostage by only two per cent of them and the army action had become a must to control the miscreants.

Addressing elders of Swat during his day long visit to Mingora, the District headquarters of Swat on Friday, the Governor said, in fact the situation confronted in the peaceful areas like FATA and Swat are the off shoots of the developments took place across the border in the wake of the 9/11 incidence.

However, the Governor said, the situation will soon become normal and development activities would be restored in all the affected areas of the district.

He also stressed the elders to revive the traditional security committees, known as Chugha Parties and assured that all possible cooperation on the part of the respective law enforcing agencies will be ensured in this respect.

He also declared to make every effort to arrange a special development package for the Swat district. As far as duration of curfew is concerned, the Governor said, efforts would be made to decrease the limits to further ease the people, keeping in view the given situation in the respective areas.

The Governor also directed the non-governmental organizations especially the Pakistan Red Crescent Society to ensure availability of sufficient quantity of eatable items and medicines in the relief camps at Mingora and Bisham.

Responding to another point the Governor assured to increase the strength of Police and Frontier Constabulary to ensure restoration of complete peaceful atmosphere in the area. Apart from this, he added, every possible support will be provided to the respective forces to perform their duties.

The members of the Jirga, meanwhile, presented their point of view as well and expressed their fullest confidence in the working of the security forces and the policies of the government.

Meanwhile, armed attack on a police check-post at Mandani Hari Chand area in district Charsadda late Thursday night left a policeman and an attacker dead and two others injured, police said Friday.

Giving details about the incident, police said that a group of five miscreants armed with lethal weapons attacked the police post at 1.40 am.

During the exchange of firing, constable Gul Zamin was martyred while head-constable Mutahir Shah and Aziz sustained bullet wounds. One of the attackers was also killed in the encounter. The name of the attacker can’t be ascertained.

Police claimed of recovering a Kalashinkov and hand grenade from the site.
