The grave-like structure was dug up in the presence of block development officer (BDO) of Nandigram Block-I Shantiram Ghorai. The body was found a day after several cartridge shells and ammunition packets were recovered from the same spot.

The police said the body belonged to a man aged between 30-35 years and was dressed in blue trousers and a shirt. The body bore two bullet marks – one on the chest and the other on waist.

Though the body is still unidentified, a local village woman, Shyamali Pramanik, claimed the body was of her husband Haren Pramanik, a Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) member. He has been missing since Nov 7 when Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) cadres launched a massive onslaught on the BUPC supporters.

The district police have started questioning Shyamali to ascertain the identity of the body.

The police near Parulbari detected another burial mound Tuesday where some human hair were found. But nothing was found from the spot after the mound was dug Wednesday.

A number of empty cartridge shells were recovered from the mound. The recovery of blank ammunition (.315 bore) sparked fresh tension in the area.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel alleged though they had first detected the mound, the local police and the administration started digging up the grave-like structure without intimating them.

Earlier Dec 5, five burial mounds were found on the side of a road at Khejuri near Nandigram from which charred skeletal remains were unearthed. The charred bones were later sent to the state Forensic Science Laboratory for tests.

Meanwhile, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team, led by Inspector General of Police (CID)-II D.P. Tarania, visited the site where the burial mounds were found.
