Bush Government Obstructs Inquiry on CIA Videotapes

Washington, Dec 15 (Prensa Latina) The government of President George W. Bush asked the Intelligence Committee of the House of Representatives to postpone the investigation on the videotapes of tortures destroyed by the Central Intelligence Agency, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

The request was made by the Department of Justice, saying the Congressional inquiry presented “significant risks” to its own preliminary investigation into the matter.

According to Times, that department is taking an even harder line with other Congressional committees looking into the matter, and is refusing to provide any information on the controversial matter.

The CIA director, Michael Hayden, appeared at a Senate committee on Tuesday admitting that his subordinates destroyed various tapes in 2005 which revealed some of its harshest interrogation tactics.

Hayden said that the tapes were destroyed to protect the security of CIA officers who took part in the questioning, but the CIA headquarters plans to investigate the case thoroughly.
