Kolkata : Security was beefed up Saturday at the West Bengal secretariat, Writers’ Building, here a day after Maoist posters were found plastered on its walls condemning the violence in Nandigram.
“We have deployed a special force outside Writers’ Building. There was definitely a lapse on the part of security personnel due to which the incident took place,” Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Veenit Goyel told IANS.
Four constables of Kolkata Police have already been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty.
Maoist posters condemning the violence in Nandigram were allegedly pasted on the walls of the high-security state secretariat Thursday night despite the presence of a posse of policemen.
Security personnel at the gate found the posters pasted on gate No.1 of the secretariat Friday morning and immediately removed them. Police have taken a photocopy of the posters for further investigation.
The posters blamed Chief Minster Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Left Front chairman Biman Bose and Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Binoy Konar for the March 14 police firing in Nandigram in which 14 people were killed.
The posters were also found on the walls of a popular cafeteria, Coffee House, in central Kolkata.
“Security has already beefed up and sufficient measures have been taken to prevent a repeat of such incidents,” Goyel said.
An official of the rank of deputy commissioner has been appointed to investigate the case. The state government has also decided to form a task force to monitor the activities of Maoists.
