The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.7-magnitude quake at 5:09 a.m. (0809 GMT) was centered 130 kilometers (80 miles) north-northeast of the port city of Antofagasta and 1,219 kilometers (757 miles) north of the capital, Santiago.

A day earlier a moderate earthquake had rattled central Chile, causing alarm but no reported victims or damage.

The government’s Emergency Bureau said the quake caused no victims or damage, but electric power and telephone services were cut in several cities.

«We have a detailed report from the area and we can say that there are no victims,» said the bureau regional director in Antofagasta, Hernan Vargas. In the city of Tocopilla, seven people were attended at a hospital, mainly for panic attacks.

Tocopilla was the most seriously damaged in the magnitude-7.7 quake that struck the same area on Nov. 14 killing two people and causing extensive damage.

Vargas said Sunday’s tremor was an aftershock of the November quake.

On Saturday afternoon another quake rattled central Chile causing alarm in several cities, including the capital of 5.5 million people, but there were no injuries or damage.
