Top-seed Vidit stretched by Pandya in Under-13 chess

New Delhi : Top seeded Vidit Santosh Gujarati of Maharashtra was made to sweat by Gujarat’s Karma Pandya at the top board in the second round of the Parsvanth 21st National Under-13 Chess Championship here Sunday.

Most matches went according to the seeds with the only surprise of the day being fifth seed and under-9 champion Fenil Shah of Gujarat being held to a draw by lower rated Ramalingam Karthik of Tamil Nadu.

In an evenly contested match, playing the Sicillian opening, Karma Pandya conceded a full point to Vidit as he ran out on time. Former world Under-12 champion Narayanan Srinath of Tamil Nadu had an easy day at the office as he beat Ittayara Paul Vadassery of Kerala. Playing the Sicillian Dragon opening, Srinath overcame Ittayara Paul in just 36 moves.

Local favorite Vaibhav Suri won his second consecutive match of the tournament by defeating Saikat Dutta of Jharkhand. After being held off to a draw in the first round, World Under-10 Bronze Medalist Prince Bajaj came back strongly to defeat Yashashwat Srivastava of New Delhi.
