Wellington : An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island Thursday, according to the New Zealand earthquake monitoring system.
The quake occurred at sea, around 50 km southeast of Gisborne and 400 km southeast of Auckland at 08:55 p.m. local time (07.55 a.m. GMT). The quake was also felt in the capital Wellington.
So far, the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunamic Warning Centre has not issued any tsunami warning. The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale.
