Modi was given a massive reception by the BJP’s Delhi unit and many party workers who turned up at the airport to greet him. Led by Modi, the BJP won for the third time in the Gujarat polls, bagging 117 seats in the 182-member assembly, 10 less than its 2002 tally.

After being feted by enthusiastic supporters, who burst crackers and raised slogans to the beat of drums, Modi’s cavalcade drove in to party leader L.K. Advani’s house. Also present were party president Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley among others.

Party leaders hinted that after his resounding victory, Modi was likely to be inducted into the party’s parliamentary board. He was dropped from the panel earlier this year after Rajnath Singh took over the party’s reins.

There has been widespread speculation that Modi would seek a bigger role in the party’s affairs, but Modi, for his part, has dismissed such suggestions.

He is expected to call on senior party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee to seek his blessings as well as meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later in the day.

Modi was sworn-in as Gujarat chief minister on Dec 25 but is yet to announce his new team of ministers.
