Washington : Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto died Thursday after fracturing her skull, not from gunshot wounds as was originally thought, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said Friday.
American news network CNN reported that Pakistani Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz blamed Bhutto’s death on a temporal fracture she sustained after being thrown against the sunroof lever of her car. She is believed to have been knocked against the sunroof by the force of a blast from a suicide bomb.
Nawaz played footage that briefly showed a handgun being fired towards Bhutto, but the he told reporters that no bullets were found in the former leader’s body.
Bhutto died Thursday as she was leaving a Rawalpindi rally. The gunshots appear to have been fired first, followed by a suicide bomb attack that left 24 people dead.
Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf has declared a three-day period of national mourning, but Nawaz told reporters that elections planned for January would go ahead as scheduled.
