Agra : Transporters in Uttar Pradesh have decided to launch a state-wide protest from Dec 31 against inclusion of the transport sector under the Value Added Tax (VAT) system.
The transporters – along with the state traders’ association – held a meeting in Agra Friday and declared their resolve to fight against VAT.
“In 22 states the transporters have been kept out of VAT. In Uttar Pradesh also the tax authorities had earlier promised to keep the transporters out of the VAT regime, but suddenly the government has changed its mind,” Mukesh Garg, a spokesperson of the Agra Goods Carrier Association said.
Transporters have decided to stop bookings, loading and unloading of goods from Jan 1. This is seen as a major challenge to the state government that is keen to switch over to VAT from the new year.
