Dhaka : Bangladesh is wooing the second generation of its diaspora who are doing well, seeking their participation and investment in the country of their roots.
Bangladesh’s objective is to transform into a medium-income country by 2021, coinciding with 50 years of the country’s independence, Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed told the closing ceremony of the three-day first Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) Conference 2007 here Saturday.
“We can achieve this objective with the support and cooperation of all our citizens living at home and abroad,” Ahmed told the audience of successful NRBs, striking a note of optimism about the country’s uplift potential.
“I know fully the efforts that the NRBs makes to keep connected and get involved with affairs of Bangladesh. I encourage NRBs to continue and expand these endeavours,” New Age newspaper quoted Sunday Ahmed as saying.
Besides Hansen Clarke, Senator from Michigan in the US, over 1,000 NRBs from 40 countries attended the conference.
According to Habibul Haque Khondker, a professor of sociology at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, the “first NRB” was Atish Dipankar, who went to Tibet after a stint in Malaysia to teach in the early 11th century.
