Haas was due to play world number one Federer in a showcase fourth-round match Monday.

But the number 13 seed from Germany was unable to play because of the injury, which had already plagued him in his third-round win against Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

It is the latest injury blow for Haas, who only returned to action at Wimbledon from a shoulder injury, which sidelined him for almost two months.

In the quarterfinals, Federer will play either former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain or Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic.
