The statistics for May showed there were 1,275 Iraqis killed with a 35 per cent drop with regard to the corresponding month last year, which recorded a death toll of 1980. This corresponded to a drop of 35 per cent.

The death toll is the lowest since June 2006, which recorded 870 dead. This also meant that the monthly death toll was the lowest in five months, since the start of the current security plan for Baghdad.

The death toll for September 2006 was the highest so far with 3,539 civilian and military Iraqis killed in the violence.

But according to the official statistics Sunday, last month, 101 US servicemen died, which was down 20 per cent on the May 2007 death toll of 126.

The only death toll that went up in June was that of British servicemen, which recorded seven dead in various incidents compared to three in May 2007.

These statistics show an improvement in the security situation in Baghdad where the security plan has been implemented.
