Amman : Jordan has reiterated its support for the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas, and called on the international community to stand by this legitimate leadership.
This came during a meeting Sunday between Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bikheet and UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Michael Williams.
A statement said Bikheet called on Israel to honour its commitments and release all Palestinian prisoners and frozen tax money, as well as to facilitate the movement of people and goods through crossings.
The premier warned of deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
He also underscored the need to revive the Middle East peace process through serious negotiations based on a specific timeline that would guarantee the Palestinian people their legal rights in establishing an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
On his part, Williams briefed the premier on results of his visit to the Palestinian territories and meetings he held with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyadh and other officials.
