Ticket-holders arriving for Monday's start of the second week of the Championships were subject to even more extensive and delaying searches before being allowed into the grounds.

Officials put Baghdad-style road barriers into place, with all vehicles entering the grounds subject to searches.

Police patrolled in fours around the perimeter and inside, as a helicopter occasionally hovered overhead for surveillance.

"As a result of recent events in London and Glasgow, and further to our own discussions with police and other authorities, as well as taking into consideration the generally higher security alert level in London and across the country, we have been advised by the police to adopt extra security measures to protect the areas of most risk," said club boss Ian Ritchie.

Public parking is not allowed inside the grounds, but scores of other private and commercial vehicles are constantly coming and going through the gates.
