HM militant killed in South Kashmir

Srinagar : A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in a joint operation by Police and Army in Shopian district of South Kashmir, this afternoon.

Official sources said that the gun battle which erupted during a search operation in at Padder Pora village of Shopian, this afternoon led to the killing of a local militant, while another militants was believed to have escaped from the spot.

Senior Superintendent of Police Pulwama told News Agency of Kashmir that based on specific inputs regarding the presence of two militants in the house of Muhammad Shafi Thoker son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din at Padder Pora in Shopian a search operation was launched by Police Pulwama and Police Kulgam in association with 62 RR.

He said that Police cordoned off the house and repeatedly asked the militants to surrender. However, the holed up militants opened indiscriminate fire on Police leading to an encounter, he said adding, and one HM militant was gunned down in the ensuing fire fight.

He identified the slain militants as Ayaz Ahmed Chopan son of Muhammad Ramzan Chopan of the same village.

While the house, where the militants were hiding, suffered severe damage in the encounter, accomplice of the slain militant is believed to have escaped from the area. A search operation was in progress to nab him, official sources said.
