Raipur: Maoist militants Tuesday shot dead a senior leader of Chhattisgarh’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in broad daylight in the state’s revolt hit southern Dantewada district, police said.
“Two Maoists whipped out a gun from their handbag and pumped several bullets into Nand Kumar Singh at a bus stand at Chindgarh near Konta, about 510 km south of capital Raipur,” police sources said.
The 45-year-old former BJP block president died on the spot.
After the shooting both miscreants shouted slogans in favour of the Maoist movement and then fled into the nearby forest.
Dantewada is one of the worst Maoist infested districts of India.
Last week, rebels killed 24 policemen in the same region in a fierce gun battle. Police estimate that about 5,000 Maoists armed with AK-47 rifles and landmines are active in the hills and forests of southern Chhattisgarh including Dantewada.
