Srinagar : One vendor was killed and at least eighteen others, including a pilgrim, were injured when unidentified militants lobbed a hand grenade towards a makeshift camp, housing Amarnath pilgrim in Baltal area of Ganderbal district, late on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 9:35 last night when militants lobbed grenade towards the main gate of the base camp. The grenade, however, missed the target and exploded outside the gate, official sources told News Agency of Kashmir, here on Wednesday.
They said that at least nineteen persons were injured in the attack. Though most of the injured were discharged after first aid, about nine of them were shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment.
One of the injured, identified as nineteen year old Abdul Rahim Lone S/O Muhammad Shaheen of Gund Kangan succumbed to his injuries in the hospital today, while condition of another vendor, Muhammad Ashraf was said to be critical.
Police said that injured include bus conductor and a pilgrim. No militant group has claimed the responsibility of the attack.
A senior police officer said that the security arrangements have been intensified around the base camp and additional troops have been deployed in the area. He claimed that it was due to alertness of the police that militants failed to strike inside the camp.
