India emphasizes fair treatment of detained Indian doctor

New Delhi : Stepping up pressure on Australia over detained Indian Doctor, Mohd Haneef issue, India has conveyed to Australia the concern of the Indian Government and people that Haneef be treated fairly and justly under Australian law.

India's Minister of External Affairs, Pranab Mukherjee and Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer discussed the developments relating to the Haneef case in a telephonic conversation.

The call was initiated at the request of the Australian side, said Navtej Sarna, Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs in a press briefing here.

Mukherjee conveyed to Downer the concern of the Indian Government and people that Mohammed Haneef be treated fairly and justly under Australian law.

The two Ministers agreed that both countries should conclude a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

Earlier, on Wednesday, India's Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said that Australia should extend all facilities and rights within its laws to the Bangalore doctor charged with giving "reckless" support to the suspects in the failed UK terror attacks.

The statement by Singh came a day after New Delhi summoned Australian Ambassador to convey its concern and emphasis that the doctor needs to be treated in a fair manner.

The Indian government formally expressed its concern about Haneef's continued detention on Tuesday also.
