Paul, who is all set to join the Union Public Service Commission as chairperson for a five-year tenure, has written to the union home ministry seeking security cover following a credible security threat to himself and his family.

Confirming Paul's request, Joint Secretary B.S. Coutinho of Union Territory division in home ministry, told IANS: "That's a small problem. We will soon fix it."

According to Delhi Police sources, Paul approached the home ministry as he faced threats from an "absconding" city police inspector Balbir Singh, who had vehemently and openly criticised the police chief for suspending another police inspector Devendra Manchanda.

Following his suspension, Manchanda had committed suicide Oct 12 last year and his family had moved the Delhi High Court seeking registration of a criminal case against Paul for harassing him and abetting his suicide.

The suicide had prompted a murmur of protest in the Delhi Police headquarters. Inspector Singh had been quite vocal in his criticism of Paul. He had accused the city police chief of victimising junior staffers of the force for not following his diktat, the sources said.

Singh, who had been transferred from the Rajouri Garden police station in west Delhi to the Delhi Police Training School, had claimed that he had been victimised for not following an "illegal" order of the police chief.

Soon after that Singh went missing, with Delhi Police saying that he was absconding from duty but his family members moving the Delhi High Court, apprehending that he had been picked up and detained by the police.

The court has asked the police to trace Singh.
