Colombo : Four Tamil guerrillas and four Home Guards have been killed in fighting between Sri Lankan security forces and the rebels, military officials said Tuesday.
The military said they thwarted an attempt by the rebels to penetrate the forward defence line at Muhamalai in Jaffna peninsula Monday, killing four cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Two soldiers suffered minor injuries in the battle.
The Home Guards got killed after midnight Monday in an attack blamed on the Tigers at Alagalla in the northern district of Vavuniya, over 250 km north of Colombo.
The government has in the meanwhile warned the public of a possible terror attack by the LTTE in Colombo by using two explosives laden vehicles.
Police chief Victor Perera said a truck and a car, both blue in colour, had made it to the capital from the north. He urged the public to provide information about the vehicles.
After being evicted from eastern province July 11, the LTTE has vowed to attack defence and economic targets aimed at weakening the government's military thrust against it.
About 5,000 people have died in the new turn of violence in the conflict since the end of 2005.
