Hoggard has failed to recover from the back spasms that kept him out of the drawn Lord's Test, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced.

England has added paceman Stuart Broad to the team that came agonisingly close to beating India Monday. But Broad is unlikely to play in the match starting Friday in Nottingham after Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson and Chris Tremlett impressed at Lord's.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "We were particularly impressed by the efforts of our inexperienced bowling attack against high-quality opposition.

"They bowled well as a unit and the challenge now will be for them to maintain the same levels of consistency at Nottingham.

"We did not consider Hoggard for this Test match on cricketing grounds.

"He is making progress in his recovery from a back injury and came through a preliminary fitness test at the ECB National Cricket Centre. No decision has yet been made as to whether he will be available for domestic cricket later this week."

England squad for second Test:

Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan (capt), Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Chris Tremlett, Ryan Sidebottom, Monty Panesar, James Anderson, Stuart Broad.
